Crowns are the Jewels of Dentistry!

Thursday, March 04, 2010

Do you have an ugly, cracked, discolored, or painful teeth? If you answered yes, then you may be in need of a crown. Dr. Sid Solomon, Los Angeles’s premier porcelain crown (cap) specialist, can help you decide on the best plan of action for you.

A crown, when cemented into place, fully encases the visible portion of the natural tooth above the gum line. There are metal and porcelain crowns, but porcelain crowns are the preferred type, since they most closely resemble natural teeth.

There are many reasons why a person may need a crown. Broken or severely worn down teeth, decayed teeth, misshapen, or discolored teeth can be repaired with a crown. Some teeth have so many fillings that a crown can be used to cover and protect what little tooth there is left.

There is no reason to delay having your teeth fixed. The procedure is usually pretty simple. There are generally just two dentist visits required. On your first visit, Dr. Solomon will examine and prepare the tooth. He will make impressions of the tooth and select a shade that matches your other healthy teeth. Then he will make a temporary crown that will be put in place while the permanent crown is carefully made by a professional master ceramist. On your second visit, he will check the fit and color of the permanent crown and cement it into place.

There is no special care needed for porcelain crowns. As long as you practice good oral hygiene, like brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings, you have nothing to worry about.

The longer you put off having these repairs made, the harder (and more painful) it will be to fix. Sometimes a root canal must be done before a crown is put in place, but if you come see Dr. Solomon soon, this can possibly be avoided.

Getting Back to the Basics…

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Many people may have already heard of Dr. Sid Solomon, a.k.a. Dr. Spa. He is a well known dentist in Los Angeles who has gotten a great deal of attention lately for his innovative Spa Dentistry, which allows his patients to receive luxurious spa treatments while taking care of otherwise unpleasant dental procedures.

Well Dr. Solomon also wants to emphasize the importance of simple, back-to-basics, preventative dental care. Periodontal Disease is one of the most common dental problems facing Americans today. An estimated 80% of adults have some form of this disease. Like the old saying says, prevention is the best medicine.

Periodontal is one of the simplest problems to avoid, yet most of us still have it. Why is this? Dr. Solomon feels that many people are not taking the time to do these easy steps: brush and floss daily, use anti-bacterial mouthwash, see a dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning, and have crooked teeth straightened.

Periodontal disease is one of the cheapest things to avoid if the proper steps are followed, but it is quite expensive to fix. It is costly to your wallet as well as your health. Did you know that Periodontal Disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and even premature births? It’s true. Periodontal disease is an infection of the mouth that can actually enter the bloodstream through the mouth and work its way to the heart and other vital organs, wreaking havoc all the way through the body.

So you may be wondering, what are the warning signs of Periodontal Disease? Dr. Solomon says that if your gums are bleeding, this may be a sign that you need to make an appointment. Receding gums, loose teeth, and halitosis are some other symptoms. This problem can be nipped in the bud, so do not delay. Schedule an appointment today. Your total health may be at risk, and this is such a simple problem to avoid.

“The fight against Periodontal Disease is very easy to win, and costly to lose. So please take this matter seriously.” –Dr. Sid Solomon, D.D.S.

Cosmetic and Spa Dentistry Combined to Perfection!

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

People who have teeth they are not proud of or embarrassed by can suffer both physically and emotionally. A big reason they haven’t had their teeth repaired may be because they are afraid to go to the dentist. Dr. Sid Solomon has been helping people like this get over their fears for more than twenty years now. He has created an environment where his patients can relax and actually feel good about going to the dentist, and, in turn, feel good about themselves.

One of Dr. Solomon’s specialties is Spa Dentistry. In fact, Dr. Solomon’s Center for Cosmetic, Implant & Neuromuscular Dentistry is the leading dental spa facility in the greater Los Angeles area. This service allows patients to receive spa treatments while undergoing dental procedures. For example, patients can receive a soothing paraffin hand treatment while being treated for TMJ, a common, very painful jaw disorder that can cause earaches, headaches, and numerous other discomforts. The spa rooms are warm, candle-lit spaces that may include relaxation chairs and calming color therapy.

Dr. Solomon has taken the time to create the ultimate atmosphere for his patients. His office, located at 1620 Westwood Blvd Los Angeles, CA is reminiscent of a five star resort. The moment you walk through the door, you will begin to feel relaxed and calm. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea, some mineral water, or some anti-oxidant rich juice in the cafe. Get cozy in the reception lounge while you wait, and peruse the spa menu. The office has a warm, non-clinical feel to it. It has been carefully decorated with lush woods and warm colors. Dr. Solomon feels this is very important in the process of helping his dental patients feel more at ease.

Dr. Solomon’s compassion is not limited to his innovative Spa Dentistry. He is a proud sponsor of numerous non-profit organizations. He has done a great deal of work with Smiles Across America. This oral health program’s main cause is to educate uninsured or underinsured children about the importance of oral disease prevention, and to get them the help they need.

“Every opportunity to relieve a person of either physical and/or emotional pain gives me the strength to work even harder for their benefit.” – Dr. Sid Solomon

A recent letter from a patient I helped!

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

After practicing conventional dentistry for 10 years, my passion for my profession was profoundly rekindled when I began to study Neuromuscular Dentistry. I learned the true science behind dentistry and I learned to consider the over all body, face and mouth in my diagnoses. Most importantly, I learned how to help my patients. For the past 13 years, I have devoted my studies and my practice to properly diagnosing and effectively treating TMJ symptoms. I am in the business of improving lives! The following is a letter from a recent patient of mine. I was so moved by the beauty of her words and clarity of her message that I wanted the world to see this:

November 17, 2009

To whom it may concern,

First and foremost I would like to state I could not be more appreciative or thankful to have found Dr. Sid Solomon when I did in early 2009. In the fall of 2008, I was involved in a car accident that on the surface appeared to be not so serious.

Well, as it turned out, several doctor visits, countless tests and multiple MRI’s later, a more serious picture of my true injuries began to appear. One thing that persisted despite a laundry list of medications and possible diagnosis were the constant and always debilitating headaches. I grew more and more frustrated and disappointed with the lack of progress all of my doctors were making.

The situation became so grave that my jaw began to be affected. One morning I woke up and simply was not able to open my mouth. I had never had any issues with my jaw or my teeth before so I was at a total loss. I could not open my mouth to take a bite and even brushing my teeth was very painful. Thankfully an acquaintance familiar with Dr. Solomon referred me to him and I made an appointment right away.

From the beginning he and his wonderful staff put me at ease. He assured me that he would be able to help me and true to his word, had me measured and fit for a dental orthosis made specifically for me. He diagnosed me with TMJ as a result of the car accident I had been involved in, and did not hesitate to fit me into his busy schedule so that I could be seen right away.

Within 30 days the headaches had disappeared and not long after that, the acute pain and discomfort in my neck began to subside to a level that was tolerable and manageable without constant pain medication. Although I am still dealing with the other effects of that car accident, I was able to cross off the migraines and TMJ off my list thanks to Dr. Solomon. I would not hesitate to wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Solomon if you or anyone you know is suffering with any symptom associated with TMJ.

Sincerely, C.S. Geier

Dr. Sid Solves the Pain Puzzle on Fox 11 News!

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Have you ever heard the saying, “it’s all in your head?” Well it is!!

According to the American Dental Association, 10.8 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). The condition is caused by an improperly aligned jaw, which contributes to a myriad of problems, including: (1) headaches and migraines (2) neck and shoulder pain (3) tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears (4) facial and particularly jaw pain (5) vertigo (6) stiff neck (7) symptoms of Bell’s Palsy (8) tingling of the finger tips, etc. The highly specialized field of Neuromuscular dentistry seeks to cure TMJ by retraining the muscles, tissues, and nerves to properly align the jaw at rest. If left untreated, the jaw must work harder to perform basic functions, such as chewing or speaking and in turn may repeatedly injure the surrounding muscles.

Dr. Sid Solomon, owner and practioner at Center for Cosmetic Implant and Neuromuscular Dentistry (CCIND) in West Los Angeles, is a leader and specialist in Neuromuscular Dentistry. But don’t let the word “dentist” scare you. His understanding that the pain you feel is really in your head has lead him to convert part of his office into a dental spa in order to put his patients at ease and in a calm, peaceful state – a necessary part of the treatment. Featured on Fox 11 morning news, Solomon explained how head and neck discomfort can be treated without medication or surgery.

Treatment

For 50 spa- licious minutes, the patient sits in a Shiatsu full body-massage chair, in a darkened room lit with aromatherapy candles and the soothing sound of a waterfall in order to bring the patient into a complete tranquil state – an important part to the therapy. While relaxing, the patient wears a TENS unit (TENS is a battery-powered unit which sends electrical impulses through electrodes placed on or near the painful site). This pulsates the facial muscles to relax and loosen the jaw in order to register the jaws measurements at rest. If desired, a paraffin wax treatment is given to the patient during this time.

After the jaw is relaxed, a comfortable, magnetic headpiece is placed on the patient. A tiny magnet is placed in the lower lip area that sends signals to the revolutionary, new technology, a K7, computer software that allows Dr. Solomon to view and measure muscle activity and jaw sounds. This activity is registered on a computer screen’s monitor. Once read, Dr. Solomon can pinpoint EXACTLY where the misalignment is in the jaw and precisely create an orthotic appliance for the patient to wear. The entire process is 100% non -invasive and 100% relaxation.

Cardiodontics: The Heart Mouth Connection

”CARDIODONTICS” : THE HEART And MOUTH CONNECTION

If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease), you’re not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease. Periodontal diseases ranges from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, patients actually end up loosing their teeth.  I battle gum disease every single day in my practice.  It is actually quite common and can be easily controlled if detected early enough and if patients keep up a proper oral hygiene regimen.

We all know that gum disease is an actual and viable threat to your oral health. Recent research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth and can adversely affect your heart.

What is periodontal disease? “perio” mean around and “dontal” refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis- an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone,. Bacteria that live and reproduce of the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease  The most common syptom of Periodontal Disease is redness and bleeding of the gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss.  Other common symptoms which I find with my patients every day include:

  • halitoses,or bad breath
  • gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
  • “pockets” between teeth and gums, indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
  • loose teeth

Generally, gum inflammation and bone destruction are  painless.   Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is not significant.  People also think it is normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.  I am here to tell you IT IS NOT!  Unfortunately,  this bleeding may be a symptom of progressing periodontists.  Think about it:  if your hand bled when you washed them, you would be concerned.

Periodontal Disease also affects your over all  Health!

Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of heath problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:

  •  heart disease
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • premature births

How to effectively Combat periodontal disease:

  1. See your dentists: every six months for a check up and get the type of cleaning he reccomends
  2. brush and floss daily
  3. use an anti-bacterial mouthwash
  4. straighten your teeth

The fight against Periodontal Disease is one that is very easy to win, and costly to loose.  So please take this matter seriously.  If you have any of the above symptoms, go in for a check up as soon as possible and follow your dentist’s diagnosis and treatment reccomendations.  You have everything to gain from it!
