Dental bonding is a procedure where a tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth, and then hardened with a special light — essentially “bonding” the material to the tooth improve a smile.

Bonding is an option that can help:

  • Repair decayed teeth
  • Repair cracked or chipped teeth
  • Improve the look of discolored teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Protect the tooth’s root that may have been exposed when gums recede.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The bonding procedure usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour per tooth. Anesthesia is usually not required, unless the procedure is being used to fill a decayed tooth. A shade guide will be used to select the correct resin color to match the color of your tooth.

The surface of the tooth will be roughened, followed by an application of a conditioning liquid. This process will help the bonding resin adhere to the tooth. The resin is then applied and shaped. An ultraviolet laser or light is then used to harden the material.

After the material is hardened, it will be trimmed, shaped and polished. You will receive care instructions after the treatment that will help you keep that new smile.
