BOTOX: THE NEW DENTAL TOOL

Yes, Botox is a great way to treat unwanted crows feet around the eyes and forehead wrinkles caused by old age, but did you know that Botox can also be used for dental purposes? From treating TMD to helping with jaw tension, Botox is a great way to help alleviate oral pain and discomfort. Read on to learn more.

TMD

When overworked or through extensive teeth grinding, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders or TMD is caused. Traditional treatment of TMD includes ice and heat treatment, or having a custom mouth guard made to prevent against teeth grinding at night. However, Botox is a new alternative treatment that many patients are investigating.

How is Botox used exactly? Botox is injected into the “chewing” muscles and is used to help relax the muscles that cause TMD. Additionally, the injections help to alleviate headaches that are caused by teeth grinding that is often associated with TMD.

Jaw Tension

Much like TMD, jaw tension is caused by placing too much stress or pressure on the jaw. However, by injecting Botoxinto the targeted area, relaxes the jaw muscles, eliminating the need to clench the jaw and unnecessarily cause strain on it. Through relaxing the jaw, the Botox injections help to alleviate some of the pain and discomfort caused by jaw tension, leaving the patient feeling relaxed and more comfortable.

Gummy Smiles

If you have a “gummy smile” where most of the focus of your smile tends to be on the upper gums, Botox injections can help reduce the appearance of gums and so the focus resides mostly on your teeth. How does Botox work to help this problem? By paralyzing the muscles surrounding your mouth, it inhibits the  contraction of the upper lip when smiling to prevent the gummy smile.

If you suffer from TMD, jaw tension, or a gummy smile and aren’t sure what the best treatment is for you, Botoxmight be the perfect solution. Rather painless and as a non-invasive procedure, Botox can be done in a matter of minutes and can give you the results that you desire. To learn more, talk to a dental professional today.

The costs are incredibly high, even with insurance. I would not go back and not refer anyone. I am going to try to be placed with a different primary care dentist.

He is very patient and kind when dealing with TMD. I also like his techniques he uses to get to the root of the issue and not just patch it up like many dentists I have dealt with before.
