TMJ Expert Dr. Sid Solomon DDS

When you were little, you probably looked at people with dentures as failures. I know I thought it as George Washington’s only flaw. How great could he have really been if he had false teeth? The thought of a toothless mouth just grossed me out, and if you were anything like me, you had a hard time imagining a life where you put your teethdenturesin each morning and take them out each night to put them in a jar.

However, dentures are not disgusting at all. And despite common beliefs, needing dentures does not mean that you neglected to care for your teeth earlier in life. While gum disease and decay can be a factor in tooth loss, it is not always the root cause. Maybe you lost most of your teeth in an accident. Or maybe your jaw simply shrank as you got older, causing your teeth to loosen and eventually fall out.

If you are missing some or all of your teeth, whether from decay, age, or something else entirely, talk to your dentist about dentures.

The Pros of Dentures

While you might imagine dentures as something that you can just go to the store and buy and then stick in your mouth, this is actually not the case. Dentures are actually very much custom-fitted to your mouth and your personal preferences.

For example, if you want all your original teeth removed, you can opt for a full denture, or what we stereotypically think of as “dentures.” However, if most of your original teeth remain and are in good shape, you can get a partial denture that is a mix between a bridge and a removable dental implant.

Whichever choice you choose, they will be made to fit your mouth exactly, based on jaw impressions and measurements.

The Cons of Dentures

Although you will receive temporary dentures immediately after the removal of your teeth, your permanent, “conventional” dentures will not be ready for 2-3 months after your teeth are extracted and healed. The wait is a short price to pay for dentures that fit comfortably, however. This means less slippage, which is already something that dentures have problems with.

There is a lot of extra care that comes with dentures. It can be too much of a hassle for some people.

If you want dentures or are looking into denture alternatives, come in and see us!

The costs are incredibly high, even with insurance. I would not go back and not refer anyone. I am going to try to be placed with a different primary care dentist.

He is very patient and kind when dealing with TMD. I also like his techniques he uses to get to the root of the issue and not just patch it up like many dentists I have dealt with before.
