TMJ Expert Dr. Sid Solomon DDS

Sitting in the dental chair doesn’t have to remind you of a scene out of a horror movie— nobody is going to use a chainsaw or household drill to help fill a filling. However, 30 to 40 million people avoid seeing the dentist altogether because the anxiety is just too much to deal with. If you’re one of these adults, or if you feel at least some level of associated anxiety, try these tips to help you stay calm, relaxed, and leave you without the opportunity to jump out of your dental chair.

  1. Deep Breathing

Yes, it may sound like some old fashioned way to calm your nerves, but deep breathing really is a lifesaver for situations like this. Simply inhale slowly through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly exhale through your mouth. This will help to not only regulate your heart rate, but it will also help you to focus on something other than the anxieties of sitting in a chair.

  1. Relaxant

If your dental anxiety is out of the roof and you just can’t seem to talk yourself into getting your teeth cleaned, it might be time to ask your dentist for some sort of chemical relaxant like Valium. When taken about 30 minutes to an hour before it’s time to sit in the dental chair, you will feel calm, relaxed, and without a care in the world. However, if your dentist does give you valium, you will likely have to have a friend or family pick you up from your appointment because you’re not supposed to drive under the influence of valium.

  1. Sedation Dentistry

Made for those who suffer from extreme anxiety, sedation dentistry is the perfect way to feel relaxed and comfortable during your cleaning. Depending on both the procedure that is being done and the severity of your anxiety, there are multiple options available from being relaxed by a chemical agent to being completely under anesthesia.

This is a great dental office. They greet you when you enter, and give you a status report on how soon you will be seen. They do thorough and professional work on you, so you are always satisfied with the results. And when you are finished, they are generous with their time planning your next visit, and answering any questions you might have. They also give fantastic advice on what you should be doing at home to maintain great dental health.

The costs are incredibly high, even with insurance. I would not go back and not refer anyone. I am going to try to be placed with a different primary care dentist.

He is very patient and kind when dealing with TMD. I also like his techniques he uses to get to the root of the issue and not just patch it up like many dentists I have dealt with before.
